An old University Project becoming reality -Thamesmed regenaration

RIBA Journal re doing piece on Thamesmead and its regeneration. This piqued my interest as when I was a student at Greenwich studying by Diploma in Architecture and Urban Design, Thamesmead was a major project for us to work upon, where we learnt about the psychology of urban spaces, how people imagine, remember and view the places they visit and live in, and more advanced concepts such as Space Syntax Analysis. Numerous concept were produces within our atelier groups, some quite extreme such as removing the river wall, allowing the area to flood and creating islands of villages connected by bridges and canals. Our group went for a more piecemeal approach, based on a interwoven areas of residential, commercial, recreation and small craft based industry, like a tartan quilt of urban layout.

Planning applicatoin fee changes pushed to 2018

Delays in Parliamentary approval mean that the legislation to increase fees by 20% and introduce new categories in regard to applications for Permission in Principle will not come into force until the New Year. The draft SI was 'laid' before parliament and published online on 19th October 2017.   As per the Town and Country Planning Act, any fee amendments have to be approved by both houses of parliament before they become 'made'. While this ‘affirmative’ process is generally seen as a formality (no such SI has been rejected since 1969) this action has not yet been scheduled into the order of business for the House of Commons , though it is moving up the list of ‘remaining orders and notices’. As the legislation willonly come into force on the 28th day after it is 'made' (not laid), there is currently no fixed date for the changes to take effect.
